Establish your signature style:
Fashion is a way to express yourself, but what if your dowdy sweats and baggy tee aren’t exactly showing off the real you? Did you know that your clothes can indicate specific aspects of your personality? It might be truer than you expect…
While there are funky combinations and plenty of styles that could never be “defined” by a single group, I’ll whittle it down to five basic categories for you to identify with. See if you see yourself in one of these groups:
Retro: You’re always looking for something unique and you enjoy the hunt for special pieces.
Whether it’s digging through your grandmother’s jewelry box or the local vintage boutique,
you get a thrill out of finding old treasures and making them your own.
What’s old is new again, and while your handbag may be the inspiration for a
modern “mainstream” version, you hold pride in the fact that yours is the original..
You appreciate things that are different and are probably a mix of eclectic and an old soul.
Classic: Your idols are Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Designers like Coco Chanel
and Christian Dior are inspiring, and you stick with ageless pieces like the little black
dress, a string of pearls, or a great pair of boot cut jeans. By sticking with the tried and
true, you know you’ll never be caught on the worst-dressed list, and you draw a sense
of pride in that. But you also know that simple and elegant doesn’t have to be boring!
You’re probably a little more organized than the average person, appreciate the finer
things in life, and tend to be sensible.
Trendy: You die for the latest runway trends and read the style forecast like you’re
preparing for an impending blizzard. Always the first to try out loud leggings, booties
with killer spikes, or a crazy neon top, you’re a fearless fashion leader. By the time
these trends go mainstream, you’re on to the next must-have. You pride yourself on a
thorough knowledge of designers but also know when something probably won’t be a
style hit. Return of the fanny-packs anyone? You’re energetic, the life of the party, and
your style is definitely a scene-stealer.
Feminine: You’re all about the feminine details. Whether it’s in the textiles (lace, sheer, ruffles,
or floral)or the cut of the garment, you know what makes you feel like a
woman. You love pretty things and stay away from loud trends. Most like the “classic”
fashionista, you seek inspiration from designers who impacted women’s fashion with
pretty dresses, body-conscious silhouettes, and the perfect jewelry accent. You’re sweet
and maybe a bit sassy, enjoy time with the girls, and would never pass up the chance to be pampered.
Carefree: You aren’t particularly into fashion, but that doesn’t mean you want to look
like a slob. You’re drawn to easy, comfortable, “middle-of-the-road” styles, nothing too
crazy! You may pick up a pair of leggings (sooo comfy) now that they’re everywhere,
but you’d never be caught dead pairing it with a crop top. You may favor function over
fashion (no “beauty is pain” mantra will trick you!) but still keep things pretty and fairly
trendy. You go with the flow and don’t get uptight when things don’t go your way. You
aren’t really extreme about anything and like to stay away from drama.
Do you identify with one of these? You could be a mix of a few, or maybe your style and personality can’t be defined by any of these descriptions. You could be more sporty, bohemian, gothic, modern, or funky. Even if you don’t directly see yourself as one from the list, I’m sure you know of some friends that fit perfectly.
Just like costume designers create a character with a carefully constructed wardrobe, we share our personality with the world by what we wear. It’s something to chew on while you stare at your closet deciding what to wear in the morning. What do you want the world to know about you today?
Author Bio: I’m devoted to everything fashion-related and love sharing that passion with others in my personal fashion blog. I’m a shopaholic girlie girl and I’ve been known to literally squeal with delight at the thought of a sale. You’ll often find me reading stacks of fashion magazines, adding to my ever-growing collection of discount sunglasses, writing about the stylish advantages of readers in my day job, planning my upcoming nuptials to my college sweetheart, or playing with my adorable puppy, Luna.
